With its new product range for the entry-level sector, Becker Traffic Assist™ Z 112 and Z 116, Becker®, the pioneer of the navigation system industry, once again demonstrated its innovative potential at the IFA 2009. Numerous intelligent functions, most of which are not available on the basic models of other manufacturers, make pinpoint navigation a pleasurable driving experience. With these new Personal Navigation Devices (PNDs), the well-established brand is introducing a generation of units that widens its product portfolio to include top-quality navigation devices for discerning beginners.

Becker Economic Route Guidance – environmentally-friendly driving on the ideal route
Sustainability is an important issue for Becker, the modern company with a rich tradition, where this factor is taken into consideration as early as the product development phase. Within this framework, mathematical models were used to develop the “Economic Route Guidance” software. This involved an analysis of the relationship between the resistances to which a vehicle is subjected and the supply of energy from fuel combustion. The technology has been specially developed by the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) division of Harman Becker Automotive Systems and is based on many years of experience. The economic route provided is an ideal compromise between travel time and fuel consumption, thus enabling the drivers to save fuel and therefore play an active part in protecting the environment.

Keeping on the move – with Traffic Patterns, traffic sign display and Permanent Route Blocking.
Thanks to NAVTEQ Traffic Patterns - the useful traffic jam prediction function which is usually only available in mid-range and top-range models - the Z 116 makes driving even more efficient and envi-ronmentally-friendly. Historical traffic data is taken into account in the route calculation so that the best route is calculated depending on the day and the time. The system simply makes detours around typical traffic jam zones and major junctions, thus saving valuable time and fuel and reducing stress.
By displaying traffic signs with place names and direction information on European motorways, integrated traffic sign display ensures that drivers always know exactly where they are – an extremely useful function, especially on journeys involving frequent changes of motorway.
Furthermore, the Permanent Route Blocking function enables roads or sections of a route to be blocked manually in the navigation system, either permanently or for a specified period of time. For example, if you know that a tunnel is closed from 8 pm on work days, you can just enter this as a blocked route and the navigation device rules this option out.
 

Safety first – no-risk telephoning thanks to Bluetooth®
The Bluetooth® function with hands-free option on the Z 116 ensures that, even when you are making a call, your hands always remain where they belong when driving – on the steering wheel. Telephone data is also easy to transfer via a phonebook download option.

With the trip computer specially installed in this device, the driver can also use a stopwatch on the journey and therefore be shown how long a certain number of kilometres took to drive. The display is accurate down to the second. This practical travel assistant can also calculate the arrival time, with or without stops, and the speed per hour, with or without calculated stops.
Clear structure and elegance – inside and outside
The functions available in the new devices ensure that the driver always has a better overview and pinpoint orientation on the journey. Day and night displays make the 4.3“ TFT touchscreen easy to read and the display is also ideally set up for darkness due to automatic dimming of the backlighting when driving through tunnels. The Lane Info function displays the recommended lane at all times and the 3D terrain view, which is a standard feature on both devices, facilitates a three-dimensional depiction of the surroundings, mountains, valleys and countryside on the display – ensuring you do not drive on the wrong roads. The route display can be shown in 2D or 3D view or in arrow mode (turn-by-turn) and it also includes the speed limits for most major roads. Incidentally, it does not really matter what language the driver speaks as the new devices can make the announcements in 28 different languages.
With a pre-installed radar detector system, the Becker Traffic Assist Z 112, the small but impressive model from the new 11x range, also saves its users from receiving expensive speeding fines. The Z 116 features an integrated traffic programme receiver which provides access to TMC information.
In addition to all these “inner values”, the external features of the new product range are also worthy of praise. Small but impressive – this sums up the new entry-level devices perfectly. They focus on what is important and what is essential for navigation, without the complication of unnecessary gimmicks and functions. The new, modern design presents rounded edges and the Z 112 features a discrete, matt black frame. The matt silver frame of the Z 116 matches well to the interior design of any car.
 

Ready to go at any time – equipment, accessories and availability
You left your navigation device in standby mode but, despite this, the battery has discharged completely by the following morning… This unpleasant surprise is a thing of the past with the new devices; the portable guides are ready to assist at any time. The new “real” on/off switch is an extremely useful function. Using this switch, the navigation device saves the information in the 2GB internal flash memory when it is switched off and therefore maintains the current battery charge level.
Those who wish to upgrade and customise their portable navigation device with features and additional content can do so easily and quickly via the Content Manager. Included in the scope of delivery of the new PNDs are the device itself, plus a stable, passive windscreen unit holder, a 12V/24V car charging cable (with integrated TMC antenna on the Z 116) and a Content Manager/map DVD. The devices with a 400MHz processor also feature a mini USB port and a Micro SD™ slot.

Z116 is a new-line up navigation with 4,3” touch screen display and map of 41 Europe country (coverage of Baltics 99%). Its main advantage is simplicity and very friendly price – now customers can get a functional navigation for entry-level unit. Z116 as all Becker units have an elegant design, “Becker button” for “on/off” and “back” functions, and also menu in Cyrillic.
New for this model is permanent road blocking option – block roads once or permanently (activating day and time, when navigation should plan a different route) and economical routing for greener way to destination, and also it is equipped with TMC traffic-receiver to automatically make new routes based on traffic jam information. But the top feature that makes Z116 very attractive is Bluetooth!

3D NAVIGATION DISPLAY
The 3D navigation display has been further optimised. 3D terrain view are displayed in high resolution and high detail. The end result is a more realistic route display and easier orientation.

NAVTEQ TRAFFIC PATTERNS
Accumulated traffic data are included in route calculations, enabling the device to determine optimal routes according to the day of the week and time of day. Frequently jammed roads and junctions are thereby avoided.

PERMANENT ROAD BLOCKING
Blocks road and route sections permanently, on specific weekdays or at specific times of the day. This enables you to permanently block long-term road works or restricted through-roads, for example.

BECKER ECONOMIC ROUTE GUIDANCE
Calculates the most economic route to your destination based on statistical/mathematical methods and many years of experience from the automotive industry. Travel time and fuel consumption are optimally combined, enabling you to save time and fuel and so play an active part in protecting the environment.

FREE LIFETIME TMC*
Free lifetime TMC is a traffic holdup warning service. The service provides the latest reports on traffic conditions and hold-ups within Western Europe, thereby optimizing dynamic route calculation. Free lifetime TMC reports are compiled with current traffic flow data that are automatically recorded with sensors. The data are transmitted to a data centre, where they are analysed and relayed to navigation systems.

BLUETOOTH® WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY
The Bluetooth® interface is designed for connecting Bluetooth®-compatible mobile phones. Telephone numbers and addresses can be directly entered via the touch-screen display or selected from a list of contacts.
